Travelling between the United Arab Emirates' two largest cities no longer requires a lengthy drive. The launch of a new passenger train service has introduced a convenient alternative, connecting Dubai and Abu Dhabi in just over an hour.

Operated by Etihad Rail, the route combines modern facilities, comfortable carriages and convenient onward transport. With tickets starting at approximately €9, it could become an appealing option for commuters and tourists alike.

A New Chapter For Rail Travel

Dubai officially joined the UAE's national passenger railway network on 30 September 2026, following the opening of Al Yalayis Station near Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Passenger services also expanded to Al Dhaid in Sharjah on the same day.

The opening followed the introduction of the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah route in June, forming part of a wider programme to connect major destinations across the Emirates.

Ten passenger stations are expected to be operational by the end of March 2027.

The Dubai–Abu Dhabi journey currently takes approximately 64 minutes, with trains travelling at speeds of up to 200 km/h.

A separate high-speed connection is planned to reduce the journey to around 35 minutes.

What To Expect At The Station

Al Yalayis Station features spacious interiors, high ceilings and comfortable waiting areas.

Passengers can purchase tickets through self-service machines, with staff available to provide assistance.

The station offers convenient access to its platforms through lifts, escalators and stairs.

Future improvements include a pedestrian bridge connecting the station directly to Dubai Metro's Red Line.

Integration with Dubai's Nol transport system already allows travellers to add a daily public transport pass to their rail booking. This provides access to local buses, trams and metro services.

How Much Do Tickets Cost?

Passengers can choose between Comfort and Premium classes, with prices depending on the booking method.

Comfort tickets purchased online start at approximately €9, compared with around €14 when purchased at the station.

Premium tickets cost approximately €30 online or €31 at the station.

The difference makes advance online booking particularly attractive for budget-conscious travellers.

Both ticket categories provide access to modern carriages and onboard facilities, although Premium offers additional space and exclusive services.

Comfortable Seats And Onboard Facilities

The trains feature contemporary interiors with cushioned seats, charging sockets, folding tables and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Comfort class provides generous legroom, while Premium passengers benefit from reclining seats and additional personal space.

Complimentary refreshments are available during the journey, including snacks and traditional Arabic coffee.

Passengers can also enjoy karak, a sweet, creamy spiced tea developed by Emirati chef Maitha Warshaw.

Large windows offer views of industrial districts, agricultural areas and desert landscapes, revealing a different side of the country.

Arriving In Abu Dhabi

The train terminates at Mohamed bin Zayed City, a residential district near Dalma Mall and Mussaffah.

Travellers heading towards central Abu Dhabi can use a connecting shuttle service costing approximately €2.50.

The shuttle serves several important destinations, including the ADNOC headquarters on Corniche Road West, the ADNEC Centre and Reem Mall.

Passengers should account for this additional journey when planning sightseeing or onward connections.

Is The New Train Worth Taking?

The service provides a practical alternative to travelling by car, particularly for visitors who prefer avoiding busy roads.

Affordable advance fares, comfortable seating and convenient connections make the railway attractive for short trips between the two cities.

As additional stations open and the planned high-speed service develops, rail travel could become an increasingly important part of exploring the UAE.

For travellers planning to visit both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the new connection offers a comfortable and straightforward way to experience two of the country's most popular destinations.
