Portugal’s Algarve is famous for beaches framed by honey-coloured cliffs, but the stretch that has taken the top spot in European Best Destinations’ 2026 ranking lies well away from the region’s busiest resorts.
Praia de Monte Clérigo, near Aljezur on the Costa Vicentina, was named the best beach in Europe for 2026. The ranking praised its combination of natural beauty, accessibility, atmosphere and relatively understated character.
Instead of large hotels and packed promenades, Monte Clérigo offers a broad Atlantic beach surrounded by dunes, rocky cliffs and a tiny settlement of whitewashed houses.

Why Monte Clérigo Stands Out

Monte Clérigo sits within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, one of Portugal’s most impressive protected coastal landscapes.
The beach stretches beneath rugged cliffs, with plenty of sand even during the busy summer months. At low tide, rocky platforms emerge at the southern end, creating natural pools where small marine creatures can be spotted.
This is Atlantic Portugal rather than the sheltered Algarve of postcard coves. Waves can be powerful, the water is cooler and the landscape feels noticeably wilder.
That also explains why surfers are drawn here. Monte Clérigo is popular with beginners as well as more experienced surfers, and several surf schools operate around the Aljezur area.

Easy to Reach, but Still Peaceful

One reason Monte Clérigo works so well is that it feels remote without actually being difficult to access.
The beach is around 10 km from Aljezur and is reached by a paved road. Access to the sand includes ramps and steps, while the beach has the basic infrastructure needed for a comfortable day by the sea.
Driving is the easiest option, particularly if Monte Clérigo is part of a wider Costa Vicentina road trip.
Parking is available near the beach, but spaces can become limited during peak summer periods, so arriving before mid-morning is sensible.

What Does a Beach Day Cost?

The beach itself is free, making Monte Clérigo an easy place to enjoy without spending much.
A realistic budget for a day excluding accommodation is around €30–€55 per person.
Allow roughly €10–€15 for a casual lunch, €3–€5 for coffee or a cold drink and another €10–€20 if you want surf equipment, a lesson or additional transport.
Bringing water, fruit and a simple picnic can reduce the total considerably.
Compared with more developed parts of the Algarve, the atmosphere here is refreshingly low-key. You are paying for food and activities rather than rows of compulsory sunbeds and beach-club extras.

Stay in Aljezur

For most travellers, Aljezur makes the best base.
The small inland town sits among green hills and whitewashed houses, with the ruins of a hilltop castle overlooking the surrounding countryside.
Staying here gives you access not only to Monte Clérigo but also to several other excellent beaches along the western Algarve.
Accommodation tends to be more varied than directly beside the beach, with guesthouses, small hotels and rural properties available.
Another option is to stay around Vale da Telha, closer to the coast and convenient for anyone planning several beach days.

Combine It With Coastal Hiking

Monte Clérigo is particularly appealing if lying on the sand all day is not your idea of a holiday.
The Costa Vicentina is crossed by walking routes through cliffs, dunes and coastal vegetation, and this section also lies on Portugal’s EuroVelo 1 cycling corridor.
A morning hike followed by an afternoon swim works particularly well.
Just remember that summer sun along exposed coastal trails can still be intense even when Atlantic breezes make temperatures feel comfortable. Carry plenty of water and avoid committing to a long unshaded walk during the hottest part of the day.

Come for Sunset

Monte Clérigo faces west, which makes late afternoon one of the best times to visit.
As the sun drops over the Atlantic, the cliffs and white houses above the beach take on warmer colours and the broad shoreline becomes particularly photogenic.
If you arrive early enough for swimming, stay through sunset rather than rushing back inland for dinner.
This is one of those places where the final hour of daylight can easily become the highlight of the day.

What About Swimming?

The Atlantic here is usually cooler and more energetic than the sea around the southern Algarve.
Strong waves and currents are possible, so conditions should always be checked before entering the water. Families may particularly enjoy the shallower areas and tidal pools exposed when the sea retreats, although children still need close supervision.
For travellers primarily seeking calm, warm swimming, the southern coast around Lagos or further east may be a better fit.
Monte Clérigo is about the complete landscape: ocean, waves, cliffs and open space.

Other Beaches in Europe’s Top 10

Portugal took first place, but Greece dominated much of the rest of the 2026 ranking.
Voutoumi Beach on Antipaxos came second, followed by Fteri Beach on Kefalonia and Elafonisi in Crete. Italy’s Bogliasco completed the top five, while Mallorca’s Cala Mesquida ranked sixth.
Norway also made an unusual appearance with remote Kvalvika Beach in the Lofoten Islands, while Greece returned with Rovinia and Paleokastritsa. Turkey’s Kaputaş also entered the top 10.

Who Will Love Monte Clérigo?

Choose Monte Clérigo if you want nature, surfing, walking and a quieter atmosphere rather than nightlife and resort facilities.
It works especially well for couples, independent travellers and families who prefer open beaches to organised beach clubs.
A car makes exploring the surrounding coast much easier, and two or three nights around Aljezur are enough to combine Monte Clérigo with nearby beaches and walking routes.
Monte Clérigo’s real appeal is not that it suddenly became Europe’s number-one beach. It is that, despite the recognition, it still feels like a place where the landscape matters more than the resort built around it.
